Another hammer blow for the PM: Rishi Sunak mocked online for appearing to use simple tool the wrong way while making jewellery… but all is not as it seems
Rishi Sunak was mocked on social media today for appearing to use a hammer cackhandedly on a visit to a jewellers studio.
The PM was the butt of jokes after video of his visit to the Emma White Jewellery Studio in Leeds yesterday gained traction online.
Footage obtained by broadcasters in Yorkshire showed the PM using the flat side of the hammer rather than one of the ends while working with Ms White.
Critics drew a comparison with an incident last year when he appeared to not know how to use a contactless payment card, and even with an infamous incident involving then labour leader Ed Miliband trying to eat a bacon sandwich.
But not is all as it appeared. After the clip had gone viral this afternoon a fuller version appeared in which Ms White, a former finalists on BBC reality show ‘All That Glitters’, tells the PM to use the hammer in the way that he did.
And after he questions the technique the clip shows her jokingly rebuking him for not doing it hard enough.
By then the damage was done, with Labour putting out the clip with a tag of ‘man who hammers working people can’t work a hammer’.
But after the longer clip was found, Tory chairman Rick Holden hit back, saying: ‘Always wise to follow the advice of those who know what they’re talking about.’

The tool the PM is shown using is a chasing hammer, which has two ends, neither of which is flat. One is a ball used for knocking out dents in metal and the other is slightly convex, and is used among other things for flattening rounded lengths of wire.
After Ms White choses the hammer for him she says: ‘You’re going to use this bit.’
After he asks: ‘Sideways?’ she replied: ‘Yes. Give it a right good … no, no, no, more! Come on Rishi.’
Twitterer Colin the Dachshund posted the original clip, saying: ‘Tell me you’ve never seen a hammer before without telling me you’ve never seen a hammer before.

The Prime Minister toured businesses at the Sunny Bank Mills complex in Farsley, having a cuppa with business owners in the main gallery before mucking in.
Speakign to reporters afterwards he said: ‘We’re big backers of Leeds. You can see that in the investment that’s gone into transport infrastructure, for example.’
And he added: ‘Most of all, this is about backing the incredible people and businesses in Leeds and I’ve been talking to some of them here today.’
