University Challenge outrage as fans call out ‘generous answer

University Challenge host allows Edinburgh Fringe Festival answer

University Challenge fans have been left furious at host Amol Rajan for allowing one team to get a point for their answer.

On Monday night’s instalment of the BBC quiz show, viewers saw the universities Oxford Brookes and Open go head to head in a first-round match.

As both teams of four were pitted against one another, they had to try and get as many questions right as possible in a bid to reach the second stage of the competition.

During the episode, host Amol asked: “In 1947, performances by eight theatre troops, who arrived uninvited to an invitation-only international festival, saw the start of which performing arts festival that takes part every August?”

Hitting the buzzer first was Manton from Oxford Brookes University who believed he knew the correct answer.

Hoping his answer was correct, he replied: “Edinburgh Festival?”

Allowing his answer, Amol replied: “Yes, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, I can accept that.”

However, it appeared that not all viewers were pleased with the point being awarded as it wasn’t long before fans took to Twitter to air their thoughts.

@elab49 questioned: “Is the Fringe the Edinburgh Festival? Really?”

@airwavey added: “Oh…. A generous giveaway on the Edinburgh Fringe answer there.”

@PaulOli42003393 simply asked his social media followers: “Really?”

@blacktartanlass commented: “Edinburgh Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe are two entirely different entities, that starter shouldn’t have been allowed.”

@hattiepeverel tweeted: “Are the Edinburgh Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe one and the same thing? I don’t think so.”

However, later on in the show, the same team weren’t given a point for their answer over the mispronunciation of the word “Ciaus”.

In the end, Oxford Brookes failed to make the next round despite an impressive score of 155.

Instead, it was Open University who won the episode after managing to score 255.

University Challenge continues Mondays on BBC Two from 8.30pm.
