NTAs sparks backlash as fans slam ‘pathetic’ Michael Parkinson mention

National Television Awards pay tribute to Paul O’Grady

The National Television Awards (NTAs) sparked a backlash with some viewers on Tuesday night, with many slamming the show for its “pathetic” tribute to Sir Michael Parkinson, who died last month.

The complaints flooded in after the award ceremony dedicated a segment to the late Paul O’Grady, who also died this year.

Introducing Paul O’Grady’s tribute, host Joel Dommett began: “Now, before we go on, here at the National Television Awards we wanted to remember someone very special.

“The one and only, Paul O’Grady.”

The show began to play some clips of Paul’s career highlights, including a brief moment with Sir Michael.

The video shows Paul dressed up as his alter ego Lily Savage hugging Sir Michael in a brief moment.

However, while fans were thrilled to see the Paul tribute, others were unhappy the NTAs didn’t give Sir Michael a proper dedication.

Fans took to Twitter in droves, with @siamese1994 fuming: “Very little coverage of Michael Parkinson. Disappointing really. #NTAs.”

@AndyGibsonTV complained: “The TV Interview Award should be dedicated to Sir Michael Parkinson, just like the Entertainment Award is dedicated to Sir Bruce Forsyth.”

@RebekkaHoskins shared: “#NTAs2023 Nothing about Michael Parkinson? But on the plus side, Ant and Dec didn’t win everything. I hope Holly is ok? Sally Lancashire..pure gold. A much better NTAs this year. Was getting very boring over the years with the same winners. Bobby Brazier..what a lovely young man.” (sic)

@RB_1991a added: “A deserved and worthy tribute for Paul O’Grady. But only a passing mention for Michael Parkinson? Not good enough.” (sic)

“As lovely as it was to see the VT in memory of Paul O’Grady, and quite right too… it’s a little disappointing that Michael Parkinson just got a 30-second mention. #NTAs2023,” @WildAnieMel pointed out. (sic)

@sdyates85 tweeted: “The production team behind the #NTAs2023 is having a shocker. A pathetic tribute to Michael Parkinson and then going to a break straight after Paul O’Grady’s tribute. These 2 people gave their life for television and you’ve shown zero respect. Get better @ITV.” (sic)

“As much as I loved #PaulOGrady the way #MichaelParkinson was recognised tonight at the #NTAs was shocking,” @ents_uk penned.
