TV fashion guru reveals three-shoe rule all holidaymakers should follow – and why you should ditch the flip flops | The Sun

A TV fashion guru has revealed the shoe rule he always follows whenever he travels – and why you should never pack flip flops.

Footwear is one of the easiest items to fill a suitcase with, so holidaymakers need to be disciplined with which shoes they take and which they leave behind.

One person who knows this all too well is Queer Eye star Tan France, who has come up with a strategy to make sure he doesn't fill his case with footwear, while still packing enough pairs to offer versatility.

His three-shoe rule includes packing one option to wear on the ride, and two further options for his carry-on luggage.

To save space, he always recommends wearing the biggest pair for the journey, with the smaller two packed in his bag.

However, he also recommends bringing something more comfortable to slip into once the plane or train sets off.

He told Real Simple: “The longer the train or plane ride, the more important that you take on that chunky shoe.

“I’ve always got, in my backpack or bag, a pair of thin slippers that I will change into as soon as I get on the plane."

In his carry-on luggage, Tan has two further pairs of footwear for the rest of his holiday.

One of which is a "lightweight sneaker, perfect for walking around the city all day…from train to tube to bus and still feeling comfortable.”

Tan insists that these shoes should be ones you don't mind getting dirty, as they'll be worn if it rains.

Finally, he suggests packing a pair of leather sandals over a pair of flip-flops, for both style and practical reasons.

He added: “Why not a flip-flop? Even at the pool, rubber flip-flops don’t exude chic. In contrast, leather sandals are easy to clean, comfortable to wear, and just as versatile."

Tan has previously revealed other tips he uses when he travels, particularly if he's trying not to be spotted out an about.

He told Travel + Leisure he does this by blending in with outfits people wouldn't expect him to wear, of course while remaining stylish.

He said: "I don't want people to know it's me and I don't think anyone expects me to wear sweats and a baseball cap.

"I also don't look like most people and if you spot my hair you know it's me in about a second. So I cover up as much as physically possible and then it is very rare that they can tell.

"But the sweats are very nice and it is a full ensemble and I will wear a beautiful coat over it, but it is casual."
