Shane MacGowan praying for ‘peace and love’ as wife shares emotional update

The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is praying for "peace and love", says his wife Victoria Mary Clarke in an update on the 65-year old's battle with ill health.

Shane, who is best known for his band's Christmas hit, The Fairytale of New York, has been in intensive care for several months. The singer was first diagnosed with viral encephalitis last year and has been admitted to hospital on a number of occasions since.

Victoria, 57, has kept the star's fans in the loop with regular updates on the Irishman's wellbeing, and Sunday (October 22) proved no different as she posted a message from his bedside. Victoria shared two snaps to X (formerly Twitter), the first of which saw Shane smiling for the camera in a hospital gown.

And the second saw her join him for a sweet selfie for her 32,000 followers. Seemingly referencing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Victoria captioned the update: "Shane is praying for peace and love for everyone in the world."

Fans flocked to the comments section with scores wishing the star well. One responded: "God Bless You Shane. You are and always have been my inspiration, and for your works and contributions, you deserve the nobel prize."

Another wrote: "Amen Shane..me too..at the age where Peace is the only way!! Be well good man, best wishes to you and Victoria." A third added: "All love and blessings to you both. May peace surely come. And may Shane be home soon x."

A fourth penned: "God bless you always Shane. Sending you all my love and strength." And a fifth said: "Hope you get well soon Shane. Your music touches us so deeply."

In December last year Victoria shared a worrying message to social media, revealing her spouse had been rushed to hospital. It followed years of health complaints since Shane fell and broke his pelvis in 2015.
