A ‘glossy’ Instagram video shared by William and Kate showing their family celebrating the Coronation signalled ‘the growing lack of cohesion’ between the Prince and his father the King, royal biographer Omid Scobie has claimed.
The five-minute video, entitled ‘The Coronation Weekend – Behind the scenes with The Prince and Princess of Wales’, shows the momentous occasion from the perspective of the heir and his family.
Now, in his sensational new book Endgame, Scobie suggests that the limited showing King Charles gets in the short film points to a departure from the previous ‘lockstep’ approach shared by Buckingham and Kensington Palace.
‘There has been a sense that William is slowly trying to separate himself from his father,’ Scobie quotes a former senior courtier as saying. ‘His popularity is high, and he doesn’t want his father’s lack of it to affect that.’
Scobie, who has been dubbed Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s ‘cheerleader-in-chief’ by some commentators, has been outspoken in his new book about the relationships between senior royals.

He has received backlash in particular for what commentators have called ‘nasty’ remarks towards Princess Kate, who he claims earned the nickname ‘Katie Keen’ and had no interest in becoming friends with Meghan Markle.
In the new book, which comes out in the UK on November 28, Scobie discusses reaction to Kate and William’s video which gave royal fans a peek inside the Coronation weekend.
He claims that a source close to William said the film was an example of ‘smart public relations’ by the future King.
But he alleges that with Charles only appearing for a short time – 14 seconds in total – the Instagram video exposes ‘the growing lack of cohesion between the King and the heir, the father and the son’.
The short film, which was posted in full on YouTube, features William and Kate along their children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, attending the ceremony which was watched by millions around the world.
It shows the family getting ready at Kensington Palace in preparation for the ceremony, with the royal couple wearing their regalia including Royal Victorian Order Mantles.
The family then leaves to travel to Westminster Abbey in a gold carriage, alongside thousands of armed forces personnel and Buckingham Palace household members.
William, Kate and their children are then seen standing on the Buckingham Palace balcony along with other members of the Royal Family after the Coronation ceremony.

The following day, the family can be seen in the film pitching in for the Big Help Out – a volunteering event held across the country to celebrate the King’s years of public service.

Prince Louis can be seen helping out with a digger while his brother George has a go at archery before the family join in a group photo with the other volunteers.
The video ends with clips taken at the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle which starred Katy Perry, Lionel Ritchie and Take That before William makes a speech in honour of the King.
He told his father: ‘We are all so proud of you,’ before he vows to ‘serve’ him and the country and finishes with ‘God Save The King’.
The short film was produced by Will Warr, a filmmaker who recently joined the Prince again to capture behind-the-scenes moments at the Earthshot Prize in Singapore.
Back in 2021, Warr was behind the camera to create the stunning 10th wedding anniversary video commissioned by the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge William and Kate.
The producer has also worked with popular social media influencers and big brands from McDonalds and Puma.
The touching film was seen as a stark contrast to Harry’s and Meghan’s Netflix documentary series which took aim at some members of the Royal family.

Posting on X last Thursday about his book, Mr Scobie wrote: ‘And let’s get this nonsense out the way – #ENDGAME is about the current state of the British Royal Family.
‘It’s not ”Harry and Meghan’s book”, I’m not ”Meg’s pal”, the Sussexes have nothing to do with it, their story is a small part of a much bigger one you can read in 12 days.’
