I’m refusing to go to my best friend’s wedding because he didn’t invite my girlfriend – I don’t care if I’m throwing away years of friendship
- The individual shared their hardline stance in a controversial post on Reddit
A man has come in for criticism after refusing to attend his best friend’s wedding –Â because they did not invite his partner.Â
Posting to Reddit’s popular Am I the A**shole thread, user @NotAMeteor explained how he was asked to be the best man by the groom, which he initially agreed to.Â
However, after official invitations were handed out, he dramatically changed his mind after seeing that his girlfriend was only given an invite to the evening ceremony.
He said that only 50 people were invited to the ceremony, rising to 100 for the evening, and any additional seats will cost them money.Â
After finding out that the bride and groom invited people they met online playing video games, the best man said it ‘feels like a bit of a slap to the face, being the best man and not being allowed one space.’

‘He tried to explain it rationally with there not being space for her but I stuck to my guns, I know this may make me the a**hole because Iâm throwing away years of friendship for something that likely wasnât a huge consideration for them,’ he added.
Responding to his original post, other users slammed the best man for his stance, arguing that he had no right to feel aggrieved at the situation at it was not his wedding taking place.Â
One user responded: ‘They have limited space and wish to keep the wedding on a budget. It is not for you to decide who watches the ceremony and who doesn’t. Your girlfriend has an invite to the evening reception. It is truly up to the couple on who they wish attends the morning portion and watching them tie the knot.’Â
Another scathingly replied: ‘Lol you can’t be serious? Backing out of his best friend’s wedding as the best man when he already said yes because his new girlfriend didn’t get an invite to a small ceremony is petty and it absolutely makes him the a**hole.’Â
Others disagreed, with a third countering: ‘Yeah so much for the âExcuseâ of not enough space lol. You’re not the a**hole’.   Â
The original poster then posted an edited update, which saw him state: The point of this edit isnât to try and convince people that Iâm in the right, I can see quite clearly that Iâve over reacted and that things could have been resolved in a different way but I just wanted to give a bit more context into our friendship.’

‘The point of contention with me is more-so that if we were together in a years time when the wedding rolls around Iâd like to think she were established in the group, I wouldnât dream of not asking my best friends partners to the most important day of my life.’
With over 1,000 comments on the thread since it was first posted to Reddit, there appeared to be a heavy divide over whether he was in the right or not to react so angrily in the first place.Â
Whether he ends up being the best man at his friend’s wedding remains to be seen.Â
