Expert shares what to do if your house is haunted – and the one thing to avoid

A paranormal expert has revealed what you should do if your house is haunted – and what you should avoid at all costs.

Halloween may be just around the corner, but even during the spooky season most people are reluctant to share their living space with the undead. Those who have been unfortunate enough to rub shoulders with otherworldly spirits have reported seeing objects fly across the room and hearing voices, and many have been unable to sleep at night.

Luckily, if you do find yourself living with a ghost, there are some things you can do. Matt Barlow, paranormal investigator and editor of GhostMag.com, said there are steps you can take to rid your sanctuary of those pesky ghouls.

"While a significant portion would prefer inaction or denial, there's an open-minded minority open to various engagement methods, including hiring experts and spiritual cleansing," Barlow said.

"While unexplained occurrences can be unsettling, try not to panic, especially if the spirit does not seem malicious. Some spirits have strong connections to a location and remain as benign presences. Many people across the country happily coexist with friendly spirits in their home and although it may be unsettling for some, it can in fact be quite comforting for others."

Barlow said those who notice unusual activity should start by keeping a log of anything unusual they notice, including times, dates and locations. If you're quick enough to capture the spirit on camera, even better – this can help you gradually piece together who is haunting your property rent-free.

"If you begin to feel really unsettled, scared or unhappy with the spirits in your home you could attempt to be assertive and audibly tell the spirit that it is your property, and you would like them to leave. This is a simple method that is often overlooked but has been known to work in many haunted homes," Barlow added.

However, there is one thing you should avoid doing if you suspect a ghost is haunting your hallways – and it may seem counterintuitive. While it may be tempting to reach for your Ouija board in a bid to chat with your new spectral friend, Barlow says this could be a mistake.

"Under no circumstances should you participate in a Ouija Board unless you know what you are doing," he stressed. "There are countless stories of individuals opening a doorway for spirit by dabbling and whether you believe in the Ouija board or not, it really should not be messed with."

If in doubt, Barlow said it's always a good idea to turn to a professional for help, but urged people dealing with undead pests to be careful who they call – as not everyone will have your best interests at heart.

"Look for ethical groups that follow proper conduct, like the UK Paranormal Society's code of respectful investigation," he said. "I also advise against provoking or disrespecting spirits, as they were once human too. Open and compassionate communication may help uncover why the spirit remains and how you can mutually coexist in the home!”
