Emma Original Kids Single Mattress review: quick summary

Although the Emma Original single mattress isn't specifically designed for kids, this award-winning mattress is an ultra-comfortable and supportive mattress for growing children.

Using the same tech that helps adults get a great night's rest – the Emma Original works well for children in terms of comfort, spinal support and temperature regulation.

Also, kids move around a lot in their sleep, and memory foam helps with motion transfer to keep them more stable and secure as they move and therefore less likely to wake up.

The Emma original mattress slotted easily into our mini tester's bottom bunk

The covers are washable and made from a breathable, hypoallergenic material to keep kids cool and help with dust allergies.

The Emma Original is a standard single size – 90 x 190cm – and comparable with the Simba kids hybrid mattress (£499) but for a more affordable price – currently on offer at £248.80.

Our mini 9-year-old tester has a history of sleep problems but he found the Emma Original to be really comfortable and a massive improvement on his old mattress.

His ability to get to sleep improved as well as the frequency of his night wakings, once he was sleeping on the new Emma mattress.

Emma Original Kids Single Mattress review: first impressions

The mattress comes rolled up in a large box so you may need some help to take it upstairs.

It's straightforward to set the mattress up – take it out of the box, unwrap it from the plastic packaging and roll it out.

It's recommended to leave it for around five hours to help it regain its natural shape – then it's ready to sleep on.

It was fairly easy to manoeuvre it into the bottom bunk of our mini tester's bunkbed and the memory foam means it's not difficult to lift at the corners to put the sheets on.

From the first moment of lying down on the mattress, he couldn't believe how comfortable it was.

It's soft and squishy but also firm and supportive thanks to the different layers of foam.

Emma Original Kids Single Mattress: full review

Our 9-year-old mini-tester struggles to settle down and hasn't slept well for years.

We've tried many things to help him sleep better – from blackout shutters and nightlights to different night-time routines – including no screens, mindfulness activities and bedtime adjustments.

It occurred to us more recently to try him on a different mattress – he's had the same fairly cheap pocket-sprung mattresses for years that we bought with his bunk bed.

Younger children up to the age of 3 or 4 years often need a firmer pocket-sprung mattress to support their growth but older children can get adequate support and more comfort from a memory foam mattress.

When our mini tester tried the Emma Original Single for the first time, he slept incredibly well the first few nights and we couldn't believe our luck!

Since then his sleep has been up and down as usual but we've seen a marked improvement in the time it takes him to get to sleep and also his night wakings have significantly reduced.

As well as the comfort, our mini tester tends to wrap himself up in his duvet when trying to get to sleep and then wake up later due to overheating. We've also seen an improvement in his ability to stay cool on the new Emma Original mattress.

The Emma Original single mattress has several features that make it a great choice for a kids' mattress:

  • Supportive and comfortable: An essential for growing bodies, the memory foam is soft and comfortable while providing optimal spinal support adapting to your child's body.
  • Spine alignment: The High Resiliency Extra layer keeps your child's spine evenly aligned in any sleeping position.
  • Temperature regulating: Thanks to the Point Elastic Airgocell® tech, the Emma original mattress helps kids regulate their temperature by absorbing and evaporating sweat.
  • Washable cover: Not only is the cover super-soft and comfortable, but it's also removable and washable, which is useful for dealing with spills or night-time accidents.

Emma Original Kids Single Mattress: the verdict

Overall, we were really happy with our Emma Original Kids mattress.

It was super easy to unpack without instructions (there's also information via a QR code on the box if needed).

From the offset, our mini-tester found it to be a huge improvement over his previous mattress in terms of comfort and support.

We've seen a notable difference in the quality of his sleep since he's been sleeping on the Emma mattress – both in how long it takes him to get to sleep and the number of night-time wakings.

We've also noticed that he seems slightly cooler and able to regulate his temperature better during the night.

Although the Emma Original single is a significant purchase – priced at £311 without the current discount offer – the price is competitive when set against other mattresses of this quality.

Overall, we feel you'll see the value for money as this is a long-term buy that will last you for years – the mattress has a 10-year warranty.

Plus, a 200-night trial means you try before you buy and return it if you're not 100% happy.
