‘Deliverance’ inbred family treated to pizza but concern grows for grunting man

Members of the infamous inbred Whittaker family have been seen having a pizza party. . . but concern is growing over the health of one of the members.

The story of the Whittaker family, who live in a rural hamlet called Odd in Virginia, US, has been shared with the world by documentary maker Mark Laita for his Soft White Underbelly series. In the YouTube latest video, the family are treated to a pizza party by Mark and a female friend.

However, the opening minutes of the video show Ray – who only grunts – being asked how he knee was, which he then starts showing to Mark and the female. He refuses to put the leg of his jeans down, and appears to be limping, but nobody is quite sure what the issue is.

The video then cuts to Mark offering the large inbred family pizza from a local Pizza Hut takeaway, while Ray then appears to show the group that he has a new pair of jeans . . . and a television, while ray then lies down on the couch to show Mark his knee once more.

Mark then begins to feel the knee to check what's going on, as Ray grunts in pain – but it is still unclear exactly what was going on with it. This leads to Ray going to another couch, where he lays down and grunts some more while pointing at his knee.

Mark then goes outside to speak to one of the family's female members, who does speak limited actual words, and asks if Ray has been to the doctors.

She said: “He's not been yet.” But she does appear to agree that he should go “if we can get him to do.”

She claims that he has arthritis, but appears unsure while making the claim. Ray's plight caused concern in the comments of the YouTube video.

One person wrote: “I felt so incredibly sorry for Ray as he continuously tried to point out his painful knee. If it is indeed arthritis, treatment can be sought to relief his pain. Imagine the agony he is going through without the ability to express it adequately. His body language and behaviour, however, clearly displays his continuous discomfort. As a nurse, I have such empathy for him, my heart breaks.”

And another posted: “It's sad to see Ray feeling bad. He's usually happy-go-lucky.”

A study of the Whittaker family tree, revealed that the parents of the 15 siblings were “first double cousins”.

First double cousins share all four grandparents and only happen when two siblings reproduce with another set of siblings and the resulting children are related to each other through both parents' families. Earlier footage captured of the incestuous family shows that while some members of the family can speak limited English, many only communicate through grunts and yelps.

Mark’s documentaries, the first of which was published on YouTube two years ago, blew up and won the family fans from around the world.
