An American man has shared his bewilderment over five British slang words – revealing the commonly-used UK phrases that he says ‘baffle’ people living in the US.
US native Jacob Hoff posted a video on TikTok listing snog, bugger, p***ed, fit and ‘whatever you guys are calling cigarettes over there’ as terms that ‘baffle us in the States.’
In his video, he counted down from five (least confusing) to one (most confusing), while offering his own commentary on why the words are so strange to him and his fellow Americans.
Coming in at number five on Jacob’s list was ‘snog.’

He explained what the word meant in the UK, with a disturbed expression: ‘Snog means to kiss. It sounds so ugly, I mean, come on, snog.’

Jacob’s number four was ‘bugger.’
‘Bugger is fun to say. I think it’s a bad word. I don’t know,’ he said.
‘We hear you guys say it a lot and I have no idea what its supposed to stand for.’

Next for his number three was ‘p***ed,’ which he said with an aggressive inflection.

In jest, Jacob then imitates a woman with a British accent as an example of how to use the word: ‘I want a guy who’s proper fit.’
‘Here either fit is slang for good clothing or fit means like you are physically fit,’ he continued in his normal voice.
‘But there I guess it means like physically attractive.’
And lastly Jacob’s number-one word ‘is whatever you guys are calling cigarettes over there.’

Many of Jacob’s 751,500 followers on TikTok flocked to the comments to let him know what they thought of his slang countdown.

‘Cigarettes can be called: Tabs, snouts, cigs, coffin nail, cancer stick and another one beginning with F,’ they explained.
