The members of Girls Aloud have revealed that they didn't tell their friends and family about their upcoming reunion, and have been avoiding everyone in the weeks prior to the announcement.
Appearing on Zoe Ball's Radio Two show on Thursday morning, Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh opened up about their upcoming reunion, which is in honour of their late bandmate Sarah Harding.
When asked how long they've been keeping the secret, Nicola replied: "Months and months, we didn't tell our family and friends, our families didn't know."
To which Nadine added: "When we put out the teaser, we've been ignoring people all week."
And Kimberley quipped: "We've been ignoring people on the school run."
The band announced their reunion tour on Instagram on Wednesday 22 November, as they wrote: "Weâre so excited to announce that we will be touring the UK & Ireland in May and June 2024.
âA celebration of Sarah, our music and our incredible fans. We canât wait to sing and dance with you all once again. – Cheryl, Kimberley, Nadine & Nicola."
Speaking to British Vogue about the exciting news, Kimberley explained that theyâre determined to give late bandmate Sarah, who tragically died aged 39 after being diagnosed with breast cancer, her time to shine on the tour.
âI think we channelled our grief into all the fundraising we did for The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal and that helped us a lot. And as tough as it will be, we want to give Sarah her moment on this tour. We need it. The fans need it. She needs it,â she said.
Meanwhile, Cheryl added that the group wonât be recording any new music, because that would mean that Sarah wouldnât be included.
âThis is about celebrating the 20 years weâve all had. So the tour has got to be inclusive of Sarah because sheâs such a massive part of our make-up,â she explained. âIt will never feel like the old Girls Aloud again but weâve reached a point where we feel ready to celebrate all of it. Sarah included.â
Fans have taken to social media to share their excitement at the reunion tour, with This Morning's Rylan writing on X, formerly Twitter: "Seeing @GirlsAloud as a 4 is proper upsetting, but these girls are gonna smash it. SO HAPPY our girls are BACK!"
"I feel like a kid again GIRLS ALOUD ARE BACK" wrote another, adding: "Sarah being included in the tour though Iâm not ready."
And a third penned: "This is the best news ever! Honestly so excited to see you and the Girls next year. Gonna be a night to remember our Sarah for sure."
