I'm a fashion guru – you're wearing the wrong style of clothes for your body type and mom jeans are a no-no | The Sun

JEANS are a go-to fashion staple for most of us – but did you know you're probably wearing the wrong style for your body shape?

Forget what the trends are and dress in a style that flatters your figure for the best look.

Fashion guru Jashan shared her top tips for finding the perfect pair of jeans on her YouTube channel The Lifestyle Cog.

Before even stepping foot in a shop to look at their denim section you first need to determine what shape you are.

This can be broken down into five basic shapes, but some people might find themselves in between two of them.

The five body shapes

Rectangle: You go straight up and down, don't have much of a defined waist and generally have a more athletic tone and physique/

Inverted triangle: Your shape is defined by your broad shoulders, larger breasts and small hips.

Hourglass: Your top half and bottom half are the same size but your waist is smaller.

The perfect fit

According to Jashan, once you know your body shape you can start thinking about different styles of jeans, as well as whether they're low, mid, or high rise.

"It's all about balancing proportions," she quipped.

Rectangle

The best style for people with this body shape will give them the illusion of more curves, so skinny jeans are perfect for this.

You should balance it out by wearing something oversizer on top though, the fashion whizz said.

Bootcut and straight leg styles can also work well for this shape, as long as you're conscious of what you're pairing them with.

Avoid anything too baggy, like mom jeans or flares, as well as low rise cuts.

Pear

The best jeans for this shape will be in a darker wash with minimal details.

Steer clear of low rise styles and opt for something mid rise instead to help balance out your shape.

The fashion whizz suggested sticking with straight leg or bootcut to create the most flattering look.

Inverted triangle

The aim with this shape is the opposite of pear – so making your hips look bigger is a good thing as it creates balance.

Because of this, something with embellishments in a lighter wash is perfect for this shape.

Cropped, wide leg styles will flatter your body without being too overwheliming.

Hourglass

Many people consider this to be the ideal body shape but knowing how to dress for it is key.

Just keep things simple and you can't go wrong, out of all the shapes you can pull of the most styles, as long as you stick to mid or high rise cuts.

Apple

Dark wash, mid rise styles are the best for this shape, Jashan expalined.

Avoid anything too skinny or with details as they will draw attention to the wrong areas.

A thick waistband is also ideal for this shape as it offers support but also creates the illusions of a waist.
