Succession actor Brian Cox told Newsnight viewers to "f*** off" in character as Logan Roy, as fans hailed him a "national treasure" over it.

The 77-year-old appeared on BBC show Newsnight with host Kirsty Wark, who couldn't help but ask him to return to his iconic persona. The 68-year-old said: "This is the last Newsnight of 2023, so Brian, would you sign us off please in the manner of Logan Roy?"

Getting into character, Brian said: "I will attempt to do my best." He then used the same grumbling tones he did as Logan in the now-ended HBO series Succession.

As Logan, Brian said: "That's all for tonight from Newsnight. We'll be back in January.

"I hope you have an amazing festive season wherever you are and whatever you're doing. And now, just… f*** off."

Sniggers could be heard from the BBC set as the Newsnight outro was played. And the clip has gone viral on social media, with fans heaping praise on the actor.

One person said: "Brian Cox has just replaced David Attenborough as our greatest living national treasure." Another said: "There's only one Brian Cox!"

A third said: "Well worth the license fee." Another laughed: "I just choked on my tea."

Meanwhile, others argued he was still second and David Attenborough was still at the top, branding the documentary maker the "goat". "Goat" stands for "greatest of all time".

Brian was highly praised for his role as Logan Roy in Succession, which ran from 2018 until earlier this year. He went on to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama series for it.

Eyes were all on the drama when it came to a close this year. The show followed the Roy family, including power-hungry Kendall Roy, played by Jeremy Strong.

The final season saw the Roy siblings, also including eldest Connor (Alan Ruck), strong-minded Shiv (Sarah Snook) and youngest Roman (Kieran Culkin), battling for the top spot in the family's media business. Brian's character Logan died earlier in the season, sending his children into a tailspin.

By the end of it, none of the Roy siblings were appointed as CEO. Instead, Shiv's husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) came out on top.
