I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! has provided viewers with some of TV’s most memorable moments of recent years – thanks in large part to its Bushtucker trials.

The hit ITV show sees famous faces pushed to their limits – living alongside one another in the Australian jungle while struggling with hunger and missing their loved ones. And some of the most challenging moments have come courtesy of the Bushtucker trials, which involves celebs taking on gruesome tasks to win food for the camp.

From chowing down on animal parts to getting up close and personal with furry critters, some of the trials have proved too much for contestants. Last week, YouTuber Nella Rose fell victim to one challenge and had to quit it early. But she is not the first famous face to have uttered the immortal line, ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’

Scott Henshall’s Jungle Boogie

In 2006, fashion designer Scott Henshall took part in a trial where he could win 10 stars by wearing a pair of plastic trousers and dancing to five disco songs – while being showered with critters.

But he left viewers shocked when he called time on the challenge after just one track, earning the camp one star. It has often been cited as being the worst Bushtucker trial performance of all time.

“I don’t dance and I hate bugs!” he screamed after bailing on the challenge. He was second to be voted off the show that year.

Natalie Appleton’s Slither River

All Saints singer Natalie Appleton had already taken part in three trials on the show in 2004 when she was voted to take part in a fourth, Slither River. In the task, she had to release 10 buoys attached to a rope in the freezing cold water filled with snakes and eels.

But Natalie only managed to win one out of a possible 10 stars before giving up. Speaking from the freezing water, she said: “I’m too dizzy, I’m going to faint. I’m really light headed. I’m really sorry everybody.”

She withdrew from the show the following day.

Helen Flanagan’s Rodent Run

Former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan had a habit of freaking out during the Bushtucker trials – which naturally meant she became the public’s favourite to take part in them. She did a total of seven during her stint on the show in 2012 and managed zero stars on three occasions.

In one trial, Helen was locked in a crate filled with critters but within just five seconds she begged Ant and Dec to let her out. She also quit the Rodent Run trial before it even started, saying she “couldn’t be bothered any more”.

Helen ended up being the fifth star eliminated that year.

Gillian McKeith’s Dreaded Digger

Nutritionist Gillian McKeith did more than her fair share of Bushtucker trials on I’m A Celebrity in 2010. She did a total of seven before she finally became the fifth contestant to be voted off the show.

But, thanks to her squeamish nature, she did not always bring back as many stars as her campmates hoped. After getting four and five stars on her previous trials, Gillian was faced with the Dreaded Digger where she would have creepy crawlies dumped on her head.

But she decided to walk away from the challenge, earning zero stars from the camp. After bailing on the task, she told hosts Ant and Dec: “It’s just too much.”

Gillian also went on to famously faint live on TV after being told she was voted to do the next trial.

Lady C’s Scarier 51

Socialite Lady Colin Campbell made an iconic appearance on I’m A Celebrity in 2015, keeping fans entertained thanks to her savage insults. However, she did not always perform when it came to the Bushtucker trials.

In one challenge, called Panic Pit, she was invited to crawl into a tunnel before being covered with bugs. But she refused to participate explaining she had a cousin who died from being buried alive so the trial would be traumatic for her.

She also refused to do the Scarier 51 challenge claiming she wasn’t going to do any more trials. Lady C withdrew from the show after two weeks – five days before Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison was crowned Queen of the Jungle.

Iain Lee’s Temple of Gloom

TV presenter and radio DJ Iain Lee earned the sympathy of the British public after trying but failing to win any stars during the Temple of Gloom challenge in 2017. During the trial, Iain had to head down into a tank of water, making his way through the chambers using air pockets to breathe, in an attempt to win meals for the camp.

But he began to panic and after several attempts, realised he could not do it and bowed out. Iain became emotional knowing that he’d let down his fellow campmates but went on to redeem himself by winning 10 stars on his next solo challenge.

He ended up finishing in third place that year behind eventual winner Georgia "Toff" Toffolo.

Anne Hegerty’s Monstrous Monoliths

The Chase star Anne Hegerty was voted to take part in the second Bushtucker trial of 2018’s I’m A Celebrity but viewers were left feeling guilty as she had a breakdown during the challenge. During the Monstrous Monoliths task, Anne had to undo padlocks whilst being covered in slime and fish guts.

But she only managed two stars before breaking down in tears and having to quit. Speaking about the experience on her way back from the camp, she said: “I did the first one in 90 seconds. That was ok. I got two stars. Then it all went pear shaped. Absolutely freak out disgusting.

“And I came out and I was just covered in gunk and mealworms and I was like no, no more, can’t do it so I shouted I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!”

Nella Rose’s Touchdown of Terror

In this year’s series of I’m A Celeb, YouTuber Nella Rose quit a Bushtucker trial called Touchdown of Terror, in which she had to play American football with campmate Sam Thompson while wearing a ‘helmet’ filled with critters.

But as the bugs were poured into the helmet, Nella, 26, was unable to cope with the pressure and so pulled her emergency cord, calling time on her participation in the trial and handing the victory to the other team – Nigel Farage and Grace Dent, who has since quit the show.
