We do not have a choice in such matters.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Lynch has called the novel an attempt at &#8216;radical empathy&#8217; that tries to plunge readers into the experience of living in a collapsing society.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I was trying to see into the modern chaos,&#8217; he told the Booker website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The unrest in Western democracies. (On the other hand, the Americans admire him, and he&#8217;s oddly successful in France.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;His style has a self-serious beauteousness; reviewing Prophet Song for this paper, Declan Ryan described it as &#8216;darkly lyrical, rich and somewhat stylised&#8217;. Several critics have even gestured to Cormac McCarthy, a comparison Lynch must like: he has used the latter&#8217;s sparse, magisterial writing for one of this novel&#8217;s three epigraphs.<\/p>\n<p><span>THE GUARDIAN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Told without paragraph breaks, the book has a breathless, claustrophobic atmosphere. Free will and the meaning of liberty are pushed beyond their limits, eroding both to a state of near non-existence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It begins in Dublin as Larry, a senior trade unionist, is disappeared at a rally, leaving his wife, Eilish, to raise their four children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;She must make impossible decisions to protect her family. In one heart-wrenching scene, she has to run across no man&#8217;s land to see her injured son at a hospital, risking execution by snipers shooting at civilians.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span>IRISH EXAMINER\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Paul Lynch is a fearless writer \u2014 unafraid of taking on large themes and tackling them face to face. The story recounts a mother&#8217;s experience of life in suburban Dublin, as it is transformed by a tyrannical government into a war zone. While it is Irish in detail, its events recall those seen nightly on the news.<\/p>\n<p><span>INDEPENDENT\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Six books, three authors called Paul, one \u00a350,000 prize. In the end, Paul Lynch has taken the spoils for his dystopian tale of a totalitarian Ireland \u2013 but it doesn&#8217;t feel like a winner that will stand the test of time &#8211; Independent\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>FINANCIAL TIMES<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Prophet Song offers a powerful account of the reasons people flee their homes, and why some are forced to take irregular routes or a perilous journey by sea to reach a place of safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Lynch describes the unremitting horrors of war, but his fiction also directly challenges the negative rhetoric surrounding refugees by articulating and illuminating their trauma.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The i added that it &#8216;leaves readers with few surprises&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Lynch&#8217;s novel shows us merely what we already know \u2013 that the world is a frightening mess \u2013 and, while it does it in a way that is well-sustained and even masterfully constructed,&#8217; the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>However, not all reviews were lukewarm.<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Times\u00a0praised the novel for its &#8216;powerful account of the reasons people flee their homes, and why some are forced to take irregular routes or a perilous journey by sea to reach a place of safety&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Paul Lynch has evidently done his research for his Booker-longlisted fifth novel: the authoritarian nightmare he has created in Prophet Song is utterly believable. Edugyan said that immediate events didn\u00b4t directly influence the choice of winner.<\/p>\n<p>Lynch said he was &#8216;astonished&#8217; by the riots &#8216;and at the same time I recognised the truth that this kind of energy is always there under the surface.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He said &#8216;Prophet Song&#8217; &#8211; written over four years starting in 2018 &#8211; &#8216;is a counterfactual novel. It&#8217;s not a prophetic statement.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I wrote the book to articulate the message that the things that are happening in this book are occurring timelessly throughout the ages and maybe we need to deepen our own responses to that,&#8217; he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>The other finalists were Irish writer Paul Murray\u00b4s &#8216;The Bee Sting;&#8217; American novelist Paul Harding\u00b4s &#8216;This Other Eden;&#8217; Canadian author Sarah Bernstein\u00b4s &#8216;Study for Obedience;&#8217; US writer Jonathan Escoffery&#8217;s &#8216;If I Survive You;&#8217; and British author Chetna Maroo\u00b4s &#8216;Western Lane.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Edugyan said the choice of winner wasn&#8217;t unanimous, but the six-hour judges&#8217; meeting wasn&#8217;t acrimonious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We all ultimately felt that this was the book that we wanted to present to the world and that this was truly a masterful work of fiction,&#8217; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/27\/10\/78274345-12795079-image-a-12_1701081631137.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Four Irish novelists and one from Northern Ireland have previously won the prize<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1969, the Booker Prize is open to English-language novels from any country published in the UK and Ireland. and has a reputation for transforming writers\u00b4 careers.
