The BBC was left wishing it could go back in time yesterday after leaving one Doctor out of its Doctor Who 60th anniversary celebration.

Fans of the long-running sci-fi series criticised the corporation after a BBC Breakfast report, marking six decades of the show, omitted Paul McGann the man who played the eighth Doctor.

The Liverpudlian actor, also famous for his role in cult film Withnail and I, starred in the 1996 television film that began with him regenerating from previous incumbent, Sylvester McCoy.

The report on BBC Breakfast by entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba yesterday talked about the ‘long succession of Doctors’.

It showed a montage of archive clips of the previous actors playing the character.

Stellar: The series is marking six decades on screen with a trio of specials, where David Tennant reprises his role as the titular Time Lord

William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and McCoy were all shown playing the Time Lord before McGann.

Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker have picked up the Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver since.

The BBC also showed a picture of Ncuti Gatwa, the actor who will take on the role as the 15th Doctor from Christmas.

But one viewer complained: ‘BBC Breakfast you had better let Lizo know that his Doctor Who report omits Paul McGann from its montage. I am calm but some Whovians might be outraged.’

He also said: ‘I have just let BBC Breakfast know their montage in a report omits McGann.’

Another writing on X, formerly know as Twitter, said it was ‘absolutely horrible’ not to have included him, while another viewer said it had missed out ‘one of the best at that’.

One added: ‘Might be an oversight (hope it was anyway) but couldn’t help but notice the lack of Paul McGann during your Doctor Who segment this morning. Especially during the montage of previous actors playing the role.’

The 1996 Doctor Who film, starring McGann, was co-produced by the BBC and Universal Studios and aired on Fox Broadcasting Network in the US.

Throwback: The Liverpudlian actor, also famous for his role in cult film Withnail and I, starred in the 1996 television film, which failed to spark a relaunch as hoped by bosses

But while it did well on the BBC, it never evolved into the hoped for relaunch of the series after disappointing ratings in America.

Doctor Who did not then properly come back to UK screens until 2005 with Eccleston as the time-travelling protagonist under the stewardship of showrunner Russell T Davies, who has returned to helm three special ’60th’ episodes this year, the first airing tomorrow (Sat Nov 25), bringing Tennant back with him.

McGann revisited his role as the eighth doctor in 2013 as part of the 50-year celebrations in an mini-episode called The Night of the Doctor.

It was recently reported that McGann is set to reprise his role as Doctor Who as part of the forthcoming 60th anniversary spin-off shows.

BBC Breakfast also interviewed the director of the first ever Doctor Who episode, Waris Hussein.

The BBC was contacted for comment.
