Dr Chris: Nail problems can reveal serious health conditions<\/h3>\n

People should check their fingernails every fortnight, a doctor has revealed.<\/p>\n

If you notice a change in colour in your nails it could be an important indicator for a number of health conditions.<\/p>\n

If your nails appear white, yellow, blue or black, you could be suffering from a serious condition, according to Dr Zainab Laftah<\/p>\n

A consultant dermatologist at HCA UK at The Shard, Dr Laftah told The Times: \u201cPale white nails can be a sign of iron deficiency anaemia, heart or kidney issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cYellow nails are commonly seen in people with thyroid and lung infections while blue nails, due to low oxygen in the blood, can signify heart and lung conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black marks on nails can be a sign of skin cancer, warned Dr Laftah. He advised: \u201cIf you see black dots or marks, consult a GP or dermatologist straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n

White nails, also known as leukonychia, is when white spots or streaks appear on your nails.<\/p>\n

Potential causes include allergies, injuries, fungal infections, poisoning, diabetes, heart failure and liver cirrhosis.<\/p>\n
