As King Charles celebrates his landmark 75th birthday today (November 14), he is marking the day just as you may expect by staying dedicated to his duties with official engagements.

While there will surely be a moment in the days to come to relax and take stock with his family, there will be one noticeable absence.

Even though Prince Harry remains in the US with Meghan Markle and their two children, it has been reported that he is expected to reach out to his father to send his best wishes on his birthday.

While this will surely be a nice moment for the pair, many experts have spoken out on why it is best that Harry stays away from any family gathering for the birthday.

When news of a family party arose, sources in the Sussexes camp claimed they did not receive any invitation to the birthday celebration – in contrast to initial suggestions an 'olive branch' invite went unanswered.

However, it has now been reported by the BBC that a "well placed" source said Harry would want to speak to his father on his big day.

This comes after a source close to the Sussexes told the Mail that the couple were not aware the King was holding a celebration until The Sunday Times made the claim.

The paper reported the King invited Harry but the Duke of Sussex "is not making the trip from California". It also said he had "turned down the offer to spend some time with his father at Balmoral" over the summer.

Whatever the truth of it, leading royal expert Jennie Bond previously explained to OK! the reason Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's absence will stop Charles' family evening becoming "horribly awkward".

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie said: "I hope Harry was invited. But…imagine how horribly awkward his presence would make the whole evening.

"What we have now is a pretty stable, happy family unit in the King and Queen, William and Kate, the Edinburghs and the Princess Royal and their families."

Jennie added: "On the other side of the Atlantic we have the estranged and disgruntled outsiders, Harry and Meghan. If they, or just Harry, rocked up at Clarence House it would inevitably put a real dampener on the celebration.

"The air is still heavy with recrimination and hurt on both sides. That needs to be sorted before the family can genuinely unite in celebration."
