Two actors have been seriously injured after a balcony fall during a production of Romeo and Juliet in Hungary.<\/p>\n
J\u00falia Sz\u00e1sz, 28, playing Juliet, and\u00a0Otto Lajos Horv\u00e1th, 60, playing her father, Lord Capulet, are in a serious but stable condition in hospital following Friday’s accident.<\/p>\n
Paramedics treated the actor and actress after they fell behind the scenery from a height during the second act of the performance in the capital, Budapest.<\/p>\n
Their injuries were so serious that both\u00a0Sz\u00e1sz and\u00a0Horv\u00e1th required surgery. The exact details were not shared.<\/p>\n
National Theatre director Attila Vidny\u00e1nszky submitted his resignation on Monday morning, ‘acknowledging his responsibility… as a result of the accident’.<\/p>\n
Hungarian culture minister,\u00a0J\u00e1nos Cs\u00e1k, has since dismissed the suggestion the director should step down.<\/p>\n
In a statement shared on Tuesday, the National Theatre said Vidny\u00e1nszky and Cs\u00e1k visited the actors at the\u00a0Traumatology Clinic of Semmelweis University today.<\/p>\n
‘According to the doctors, the condition of the two injured artists, J\u00falia Sz\u00e1sz and Ott\u00f3 Lajos Horv\u00e1th, is improving.’<\/p>\n

In a statement on Friday, November 10, Vidny\u00e1nszky said: ‘… Our Romeo and Juliet performance on Friday was interrupted during the second act due to the accident of J\u00falia Sz\u00e1sz and Ott\u00f3 Lajos Horv\u00e1th.<\/p>\n
‘The paramedics who arrived in a short time gave the two artists professional care on the spot and then transported them to the hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘They are in good condition. For the sake of peace of mind, we ask the staff of the press not to contact them with their questions for the time being.’<\/p>\n
Vidny\u00e1nszky confirmed an investigation was underway to look into the ‘circumstances’ surrounding the accident.<\/p>\n
He added: ‘We wish our two excellent actors and colleagues a speedy recovery and look forward to their return to the theatre.’<\/p>\n
Vidny\u00e1nszky has been in the top role for ten years, an appointment that was due to be wrapped up this year.<\/p>\n
His posting was extended a further five years, until 2028, earlier this year.<\/p>\n
J\u00e1nos Cs\u00e1k, the culture minister, also shared well-wishes on Instagram on Monday.<\/p>\n
In a post, he shared a picture of himself apparently consulting with doctors at the clinic.<\/p>\n
He said: ‘I\u00a0was informed about the condition of two actors who had an accident at the National Theatre at the Traumatology Clinic of Semmelweis University, where Prof. Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, rector and Dr. Tam\u00e1s Bodzay, head of the Traumatology Clinic received us.<\/p>\n
‘The condition of J\u00falia Sz\u00e1sz and Ott\u00f3 Lajos Horv\u00e1th is constantly improving thanks to the professional and high-quality medical care.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘The Ministry provides immediate emergency assistance to both artists during this difficult time.<\/p>\n

J\u00falia Sz\u00e1sz is an actress with credits in a number of acclaimed Hungarian series including\u00a0A bes\u00fag\u00f3 (2022) and\u00a0Csak sz\u00ednh\u00e1z \u00e9s m\u00e1s semmi (2016 – ).<\/p>\n
She also appeared in the romantic comedy\u00a0Neither with You (2019).<\/p>\n
Otto Lajos Horv\u00e1th has a decorated film acting career spanning more than three decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Horv\u00e1th has played a broad ranges of roles on stage, too, performing in plays and adaptations of Shakespeare, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Euripides and Gogol among others at top Hungarian theatres.\u00a0<\/p>\n
