{"id":240817,"date":"2023-11-15T03:52:34","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T03:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lovemainstream.com\/?p=240817"},"modified":"2023-11-15T03:52:34","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T03:52:34","slug":"national-trust-launches-calendar-that-excludes-christmas-and-easter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lovemainstream.com\/world-news\/national-trust-launches-calendar-that-excludes-christmas-and-easter\/","title":{"rendered":"National Trust launches calendar that excludes Christmas and Easter"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Members claim National Trust has gone &#8216;too woke&#8217; after launching charity calendar that excludes Christmas and Easter &#8211; but includes other religions&#8217; festivals<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ:\u00a0National Trust chairman says the charity must &#8216;move with the times&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>National Trust members have complained about a charity calendar that excludes Christmas and Easter &#8211; while including other religions&#8217; festivals.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;inclusivity and wellbeing&#8217; calendar, which has been provided for volunteers, includes Hinduism&#8217;s Diwali, and Islam&#8217;s Eid and Ramadan.<\/p>\n<p>But there is no sign of the Christian holidays.<\/p>\n<p>The calendar was objected to at the National Trust&#8217;s annual meeting, alongside issues about the charity increasingly focusing on gay history and focusing on the slavery links of its historic properties.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the Trust however insisted that Christmas and Easter remain very much dates in its diary, and in print in numerous publications &#8211; but that the special calendar is designed to help broaden the range of events offered at attractions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/12\/18\/77711469-12740485-image-m-2_1699813716892.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>National Trust members have complained about a charity calendar that excludes Christmas and Easter &#8211; while including other religions&#8217; festivals (File image)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The unusually heated National Trust annual general meeting took place at the STEAM museum in Swindon yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>To a round of applause, Trust member David Lamming said from the floor that a volunteer had raised concerns with him about the &#8216;inclusivity calendar&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lamming said: &#8216;It doesn&#8217;t include the Christian festivals of Christmas and Easter. Can we have an explanation please for those being omitted?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>One of the applauding audience members observed that the calendar was an indication the Trust had gone &#8216;too woke&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>But a National Trust spokesman said of the calendar: &#8216;This internal guidance is specifically designed to supplement the National Trust&#8217;s year-round programming that includes Christmas and Easter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It enables our teams to mark more religious and cultural festivals, to serve local communities and allow everyone to learn about and enjoy different cultures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We&#8217;re proud to host some wonderful celebrations for Eid, Diwali, Hanukkah, and other occasions.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/12\/18\/77711471-12740485-image-m-4_1699813736635.jpg\" height=\"931\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;inclusivity and wellbeing&#8217; calendar, which has been provided for volunteers, includes Hinduism&#8217;s Diwali, and Islam&#8217;s Eid and Ramadan (File image)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More controversy raged at the conference over the Trust&#8217;s introduction of a new &#8216;quick vote&#8217; method for electing the charity&#8217;s overseeing council and indicating preferences for proposed police changes.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0National Trust chairman says the charity must &#8216;move with the times&#8217; and is considering the return of artefacts amid accusations the organisation has a &#8216;woke agenda&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Under the &#8216;quick vote&#8217; system, the easing option is to agree with the candidates and policies supported by the charities trustees.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents claim this reduces members&#8217; control over the direction the Trust takes, and increases the power of the trustees, rather than holding them to true account.<\/p>\n<p>An attempt to reverse the introduction of the system failed however.<\/p>\n<p>Distinguished retired Supreme Court judge Jonathan Sumption &#8211; who failed in a bid to win a place on the council &#8211; said of the &#8216;quick vote&#8217; system: &#8216;Its practical consequence is plain. It is to convert a system of election into a system of co-option by the trustees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s strange for a body which is designed&#8230; to hold the trustees to account to be in practice selected by the trustees themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It also seems strange for a body whose function is very largely advisory to be selected by those it is supposed to advise so that they get the kind of advice that they would like.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Lord Sumption had been endorse by National Trust faction Restore Trust, established amid concern at increasingly &#8216;political&#8217; decisions being taken by the trustees.
