David Bowie\u2019s legendary music producer has revealed that when he first heard the iconic singer he thought he was \u201call over the place\u201d.<\/p>\n

And he even turned down the seminal hit Space Oddity. Tony Visconti told the Out to Lunch podcast: \u201cHe played me this album where he did these Tony Newley impersonations.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I said, \u2018Here\u2019s what I think, he\u2019s all over the place and he needs to be focused\u2019.\u201d He added: \u201cLittle did I know how versatile he was.\u201d They eventually started working together \u2013 but Tony, now 79, was still not convinced all Bowie\u2019s work was a hit.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWhen David brought Space Oddity to me I said, \u2018It\u2019s a cheap shot\u2019. \u201cI said \u2018it\u2019s a novelty record, what are you going to follow it up with \u2013 the trip to Jupiter?\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bowie went to another producer, it became a huge hit, and Tony apologised. \u201cHe says, \u2018No, no, we had to get that one out of the way, now let\u2019s continue to make the Space Oddity album\u2019. I was flabbergasted.\u201d<\/p>\n
