A jailed Russian oligarch who filed a lawsuit in the High Court seeking £12 billion over claims his assets were seized in a Kremlin-backed conspiracy had a close financial relationship with President Putin and his inner circle, MailOnline can reveal.

Ziyavudin Magomedov, currently in prison in Moscow, claims his arrest on embezzlement charges was part of a state-supported plot to take over his shares in Russian port operators, oil companies and a nuclear energy agency.

But Russian anti-corruption campaigners claim the lawsuit is undermined by the Oligarch’s personal and financial relationship with Putin and his inner circle. Magomedov contributed £50 million to the purchase and maintenance of a £500 million superyacht for the use of Putin and his lover, according to a report by the opposition news outlet ‘Dossier Centre’.

The luxurious 460-foot-long yacht Scheherazade was a Christmas gift in 2014 by a group of sycophantic Russian Oligarchs.

‘Just over 583million Euro was transferred from five offshore companies for the construction of the yacht,’ claimed the Dossier Centre. One of those companies was called High Definition which has been linked to Magomedov.

The luxurious 460ft-long Scheherazade yacht is suspected to be part of Putin’s secret £80 billion fortune which is managed by Oligarchs and political cronies.

His girlfriend Alina Kabaeva, 39, has been on board the luxury vessel which boasts six decks, gold plated toilet roll holders, marble bathroom fittings and a judo gym with framed pictures of Putin’s black belts. The crew were mainly Russian secret service officers.

The yacht was sailed close to Black Sea residences linked to Putin, notably his official retreat in Sochi and his super-palace which cost a reported £1 billion, according to the Dossier Centre. But last May the Scheherazade was seized by the Italian police near Pisa after documents revealed how its ownership was ‘connected to senior elements of the Russian government’.

When asked about his contribution to Putin’s yacht, a spokesperson for Magomedov said: ‘This allegation is strongly refuted. We regard it as a lie designed by his many political and commercial adversaries to damage Mr Magomedov’s reputation in the West’.

But investigators working for the opposition say Magomedov has also funded the family of Putin’s influential spokesperson, Dimitry Peskov.

The Alexey Navalny Foundation claimed that Peskov’s son Nikolai has been the creative director of Fight Nights, a mixed martial arts promotions company owned by the Russian Oligarch. A recent martial arts event was attended by Putin’s chief press secretary (see photograph if required). ‘I like talking to Mr Peskov,’ said Magomedov who was identified by the US Treasury in 2018 as one of 96 Oligarchs close to Putin.

Alina Kabaeva is reported to the long-time partner of Russian President Vladimir Putin. She is a decorated Russian gymnast and they were first reported to be involved together in 2008

A spokesperson for Magomedov confirmed he owned Fight Nights but told MailOnline: ‘There exists no real evidence for this allegation from the Navalny Foundation. It is ridiculous to link Mr Magomedov to Dmitry Peskov given his longstanding unjust treatment at the hands of the Russian state. Peskov has led news briefings against Mr Magomedov in his capacity as press secretary to the Kremlin. Any suggestion of a personal and financial relationship between the two is self-evidently preposterous’.

The foundation also claimed that Magomedov paid for Peskov’s honeymoon by renting him the Maltese Falcon, the world’s most luxurious and expensive sailing yacht, for £336,000 per week. Their respective children have also socialised.

This claim is also denied by Magomedov’s spokesperson: ‘This allegation is untrue, nonsensical and not backed by any evidence. It dates to 2015 on the basis of an unevidenced anonymous tip-off. Even by the Navalny Foundation’s own admission, the allegation lacks direct proof.’

Magomedov, 55, was once one of Russia’s richest men with a net worth of $1.4 billion, according to Forbes. He built his fortune during Dmitry Medvedev’s presidency as the founder and owner of Summa, a Russian holding company with shares in port logistics, telecommunications, and oil transport. He became the owner of NCSP, Russia’s largest seaport.

Magomedov is now in prison at Lefortovo prison in Moscow. He was convicted of embezzling £146.5 million from the Russian state

Magomedov strenuously denies all accusations of wrongdoing. He is currently serving a 19 year sentence at the high security prison

Summa also held a stake in the construction of the Kaliningrad Stadium for the 2018 football World Cup stadium in Russia. The stadium was among the most problematic of the dozen built for the World Cup.

Its completion was delayed and downsized to a capacity of 10,000 below the FIFA requirement. Built on wetlands, builders were supposed to shore up the foundations but a court in Russia ruled this had not been done and Summa had been overbilling on the work.

Last year Magomedov was convicted of embezzling £146.5 million from the Russian state through transactions by subsidiaries of Summa, including the use of Scotland’s notorious ‘tax haven’ company Newbay Investments.

He was sentenced to 19 years in jail and is currently in the high security prison of Lefortovo.

Magomedov strenuously denies all accusations of wrongdoing. ‘Following what his legal team argued was a show trial, he was convicted by a Moscow Judge whose verdict uncritically parroted much of the prosecution’s case. There was no evidence to support the prosecution’s claims of embezzlement by Mr Magomedov. The conviction is being appealed’.

But the Oligarch’s secrets could be revealed in the UK next year when his multi-billion lawsuit is heard in the High Court.

He claims his shares in the port operator DP World, oil group Transneft, private equity firm TPG and nuclear energy agency Rosatom were seized in a conspiracy orchestrated by the Kremlin, according to court filings.

His lawyers alleged in court that TPG was part of a conspiracy to sell his stake in Fesco, which controls the crucial Pacific port of Vladivostok.

But last week a High Court Judge rejected an attempt by Magomedov to freeze the assets of some of the people he accused of running the conspiracy. The case will now proceed to trial.
