A Mississippi mom has claimed white police hit her black son with a car and buried him in a paupers’ grave without telling her for nearly six months.

Bettersten Wade’s son Dexter Wade, 37, was allegedly mowed down by a Jackson Police Department officer whilst he was crossing a highway.

A prescription bottle found at the scene easily identified him and Wade, 65, had been calling police incessantly for updates on her son, NBC News reports.

But his body sat in a morgue unclaimed while his mother searched for an agonizing 172 days. She claims they eventually revealed the circumstances of his death and told her they had buried her son in a penal grave.

The grieving mom was finally taken to the burial site earlier this month, which was unmarked except for a plot number. Once there, she fell to her knees in aguish and cried out: ‘I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry,’ according to NBC.

Bettersten Wade, 65, claims cops did not tell her they had hit her son Dexter Wade, 37, (pictured with his kids) with a car and buried him in a penal grave for almost six months

The grieving mother searched for her son for 172 days following his disappearance on March 5

Dexter disappeared on March 5 following an argument with his mother. He was allegedly struck and killed the same day by an off-duty officer in an SUV.

The death was reportedly ruled as an accident, with Dexter found to have PCP and methamphetamine in his system at the time of death.

He was identified by a coroner who claims he left a voicemail for Wade, which she is unsure if she ever received.

He also claimed he passed on details to the police who have the job of notifying kin and issuing the proper death notice, but this never happened.

After almost ten days with no news, Wade reported her son missing to police. The health care aide was hesitant at first, because her brother had died at the hands of another Jackson police officer in 2019.

The cop concerned fatally slammed George Robinson, 62, to the ground and was convicted of manslaughter. The officer is appealing, but Wade’s family filed a wrongful death suit which is still pending.

Now she has speculated whether her son’s killing has something to do with a ‘vendetta’ against her over the legal action.

Wade told NBC News: ‘They had me looking for him all that time, and they knew who he was. Maybe it was a vendetta. Maybe they buried my son to get back at me.’

She claims the father-of-two’s death was ruled as an accident and he was buried in Hinds County Penal Farm

Wade posted heartbreaking appeals for information on her son’s whereabouts as late as July following his disappearance, she claims police knew he was dead all along

In the early days of the search, an investigator came and took an incident report, initially misspelling Dexter’s name.

Wade said she also sent multiple photos of her son to the police and began posting increasingly desperate Facebook posts seeking help trying to find her son.

For months, she continued appealing to the public for information on Dexter. A post from July details her heartbreak. It read: ‘Dexter your kids miss you, I miss you and your Grandma sister auntie cuz friends miss you. You don’t have to come home just let us know you all right. We love you.’

The mother of Dexter’s two daughters, Candice Thomas, told NBC News: ‘The girls would ask, ‘Did you hear from my daddy? We just kept praying he was all right.’

The coroner also said they followed up with police to see if Dexter’s next of kin had been located on numerous occasions, but was told there were no developments.

Eventually he applied for approval to bury Wade in Hinds County Penal Farm which was granted in April, the outlet reports.

But it was not until August that Wade learned her son was dead. She was then reportedly forced to pay a $250 fee to claim his body.

Speaking to him at his grave site, she said: ‘Dexter, I want to tell you I am so sorry. I’m so sorry this happened to you. But mama didn’t know. Mama didn’t know. I always loved you and I miss you. Farewell, baby. Farewell.’

Wade is now trying to raise $100,000 to exhume her son’s body and give him a funeral. She said on the GoFundMe page: ‘I need help so I can give him a proper resting place.’

DailyMail.com has contacted Jackson Police Department for comment.

A spokesperson for Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba told NBC News police did not intentionally harm Dexter.

She said: ‘There was miscommunication but there was no malicious intent anywhere in this whole situation.’
