KARA KENNEDY: Harry and Meghan’s twenty excruciating seconds on Family Guy are proof of their descent into the cultural trash can – and America’s irritation at their lazy self-entitlement<\/h1>\n

It\u2019s happened faster than many of us perhaps thought.<\/p>\n

At the start of the year, Harry and Meghan were on everyone\u2019s lips.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the double-barrel onslaught of their Netflix documentary whine-a-thon and Harry\u2019s misery memoir Spare, people simply couldn\u2019t get enough.<\/p>\n

Love them or loathe them, they <\/span>were the conversation.<\/p>\n

Yet in less than ten months, it seems their inevitable implosion in relevance, their downward spiral towards the cultural trash can, is all but complete.<\/p>\n

And how sad.<\/p>\n

A pair whose refreshing presence once said so much, who \u2013 as the <\/span>21st Century royal couple \u2013 offered a bright, modern future of influence (in the truest sense), reduced to the butt of a throwaway gag on a comedy cartoon series way past its prime.<\/p>\n

Gone are the days of full-episode South Park takedowns. On Sunday, Family Guy \u2013 limping on in its 22nd series \u2013 featured a twenty-second satire of the pair.<\/p>\n

At the start of the year, Harry and Meghan were on everyone\u2019s lips. Thanks to the double-barrel onslaught of their Netflix documentary whine-a-thon and Harry\u2019s misery memoir Spare, people couldn\u2019t get enough. Yet in less than ten months, it seems their inevitable implosion in relevance, their downward spiral towards the cultural trash can, is all but complete.<\/p>\n

We see a cartoonified Duke and Duchess sipping iced tea poolside at their Montecito mansion. A butler comes over with a stack of envelopes and says to Harry: \u2018Sir, your millions from Netflix for\u2026 no one knows what.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Put it with the rest of them,\u2019 Harry says, waving the butler away.<\/p>\n

Meghan, lounging in her bikini, gets an alert on her iPhone: \u2018Baaabe, time to do our daily $250,000 sponsored Instagram post\u2026 for Del Taco.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I shouldn\u2019t have left the made-up nonsense,\u2019 Harry drones.<\/p>\n

No, he shouldn\u2019t. Because look where it\u2019s got him.<\/p>\n

The worst thing about the scene is that it\u2019s excruciatingly unfunny.<\/p>\n

The unfairly gained Montecito millions, the moody prince, his fame-obsessed actress-wife. It\u2019s all pretty obvious stuff \u2013 and tells you a lot about the quality of the writer\u2019s room on a show that\u2019s been running since 1999.<\/p>\n

No subtlety, no comic timing, just one smack-you-in-the-face obvious \u2018punchline\u2019: America thinks you, Harry and Meghan, are grifters!<\/p>\n

Back in June, when Meghan\u2019s Spotify show Archetypes was axed after one underwhelming series, American sports supremo and Spotify\u2019s own \u2018head of podcast innovation and monetization\u2019 Bill Simmons explosively lambasted the pair as \u2018f***ing grifters\u2019.<\/p>\n

It was rude, perhaps uncalled for, and no doubt deliberately provocative.<\/p>\n

It could also have been dismissed as the outburst of one angry old man.<\/p>\n

This latest Family Guy clip changes things. It tells us that Americans everywhere now agree with Simmons. They\u2019ve lost the culture.<\/p>\n

But it didn\u2019t have to be this way.<\/p>\n

While Britain washed its hands of the boresome pair, excitement in America was palpable at the prospect of gaining a slice of Royalty stateside.<\/p>\n

Hollywood was practically polishing the Walk of Fame stars ahead of time.<\/p>\n

This is a nation of hard workers. And when it became clear that Harry and Meghan wanted it all \u2013 to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars \u2013 without doing, well, very much at all, Americans woke up from the runaway-Royal daze.<\/p>\n

How could they not? Even the most patient will admit that the moaning, the woe-is-me-ing, the Mandela cosplaying all became way too much.<\/p>\n

There was Oprah, The Cut, Netflix, Spare, tell-all after tell-all interview amid boucl\u00e9 couches and $1,800 Hermes blankets, hashing and rehashing the same tall tale of grievance.<\/p>\n

Hollywood sure loves a sob story… until it doesn’t.<\/p>\n

Whatever you think of them, America\u2019s true cast of A-Listers \u2013 the Gwyneths, the J-Los, the Beyonc\u00e9s \u2013 work bloody hard to maintain their influence and wealth, often over decades-long careers.<\/p>\n

A lot of graft goes into the constant flurry of exciting brand evolutions, new album announcements, vaginal jade-eggs releases.<\/p>\n

Paltrow co-owns California\u2019s biggest cannabis company and she never even talks about it.<\/p>\n

So what certainly doesn\u2019t fly is calling up a few famous gal pals to whinge with lazy self-entitlement on hour-long podcasts about your unmatched struggles, globetrotting like a gap-year teen on pointless preening \u2018tours\u2019 (see Harry in Japan), spewing word-guff at meaningless ceremonies (see Meghan\u2019s Women of Vision Award), while still expecting the butler to deliver the check on the golden tray.<\/p>\n

Of course, there has been much chatter of a coming Sussex reinvention.<\/p>\n

In April, Meghan signed on with Hollywood Rottweiler Ari Emanuel\u2019s talent agency WME. And we’ve heard countless rumors about a revival of \u2018The Tig\u2019, a much-touted return to Instagram, even a separation of Brands Sussex (Meghan bolstering her celebrity, Harry prioritizing philanthropy and other noble causes).<\/p>\n

But we\u2019re still waiting.<\/p>\n

This is a nation of hard workers. Coverage of the couple\u2019s recent public appearances has been notably scant.<\/p>\n

September\u2019s Invictus Games came and went with one brief frenzy over Meghan\u2019s J Crew sweater. A World Mental Health Day event in New York earlier this month probably happened \u2013 but who knows or cares?<\/p>\n

Harry and Meghan fled Britain for America to escape their gilded life of privilege and unearned influence.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the sunny hills of Montecito will now become an even worse palace-prison, one where their assets and friends surely dwindle, their familial ties become ever-more strained, and the chance of reconciliation sinks further away.<\/p>\n
