They immediately tried to sort out the maintenance bills but hit a block when it came to the gas.<\/p>\n<p>Letters from the National Grid and their housing association, both dated in 2006, confirm struggles to establish the source of the gas.<\/p>\n<p>Lee and Jo claimed they then contacted the ombudsman who said they should wait to hear. Lee added: &quot;It was very strange. After a few months we had bills for everything but not gas.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was worried about suddenly getting a big bill \u2013 so I tried really hard to find out who was supplying our gas. Then a frightening follow-up letter from Cadent finally turned up three months later.<\/p>\n<p>It said the couple owed nearly \u00a311,000 for gas usage between 2005 and 2023. They were served with the official invoice last month \u2013 which says they had 30 days to pay.<\/p>\n<p>And the pair said they are still none the wiser as to who supplied the gas over the 18-year period. The 1986 Gas Act says they can recover costs if I&apos;m at fault but I&apos;m not.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Who would write in their calendar every year to try and find out who&apos;s providing gas to their home? We just got on with living there \u2013 like we were told to.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I did everything I could. I didn&apos;t want to just let the problem go. There has to be shared responsibility for this.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson from Cadent said: &quot;While Cadent are not a gas supplier, as part of our gas transportation license we have an obligation to investigate and use our reasonable endeavours to recover the cost of any gas used outside of a supplier contract.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;While we cannot comment on individual cases, we must stress we have a specialist team who are on hand to offer help and support to customers who are required to make a repayment.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><b> <i> Want all the biggest Lifestyle news straight to your inbox?
