Vaginal discharge is a very common and completely normal occurrence that can strike at any age.<\/p>\n
The NHS explains that the term refers to fluid or mucus that keeps the vagina clean and moist, protecting it from infection.<\/p>\n
However, Dr Simi Adedeji, a women\u2019s health and wellbeing expert, shared on her YouTube channel that it\u2019s important to pay attention to any changes as discharge that it\u2019s unusual for you could be a sign of a health problem.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the doctor explained what different colours of vaginal discharge could mean.<\/p>\n
According to the doctor, this type of discharge is \u201cnot normal\u201d and should ring alarm bells.<\/p>\n
Don’t miss… <\/strong> Vagina health: How bacterial vaginal infections affect fertility<\/strong><\/p>\n https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3jsUgrYBp-g?si=QYURh1g4SCvGzxW4<\/p>\n Yellow green vaginal discharge can be a symptom of sexually transmitted infection (STI), ranging from trichomoniasis to gonorrhoea.<\/p>\n \u201cThe STI that characteristically gives frothy, yellow green vaginal discharge is trichomoniasis,\u201d Dr Adedeji said in the video.<\/p>\n Mostly contracted through having sex without a condom, trichomoniasis is the \u201ccommonest, non-viral\u201d STI, which is triggered by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis.<\/p>\n Other symptoms this STI can trigger include fishy smell, burning and stinging when passing urine, sweeling and itching around vagina.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIf you have got these symptoms, you need to go and get yourself checked out at a sexual health clinic,\u201d the doctor added.<\/p>\n Red or pink vaginal discharge could be \u201ccompletely\u201d normal but it\u2019s important to consider the whole picture.<\/p>\n The doctor said: \u201cSo for example, if you are having a red or a pink discharge, around the time you\u2019re expecting your period, then this could just be completely normal. It just means there\u2019s blood around.<\/p>\n \u201cAnother time you can get pink or red discharge is shortly after sex – I\u2019m talking about the first 24 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n However, some people can experience this type of discharge in between their periods which is called spotting and this could be a sign that it\u2019s time to go and see your doctor, Dr Adedeji advised.<\/p>\n Red or pink discharge could be a sign of pregnancy, miscarriage as well as endometrial cancer if you have been through the menopause.<\/p>\n We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
