WHEN it comes to European islands, most people think of Mykonos in Greece, Majorca in Spain, or Capri in Italy.<\/p>\n

But there are plenty of other lesser-known European islands that many Brits probably haven't heard about.<\/p>\n


\n<\/p>\n

Set in the North Sea, Sylt is the largest of\u00a0Germany\u2019s North Frisian islands and Germany's fourth largest island. <\/p>\n

Despite not being too well-known among Brit holidaymakers, the tiny German island rose to fame in the 1960s after a string of celebrity guests reinvented it into a party hotspot. <\/p>\n

German playboy<\/span> Gunter Sachs visited the island, and other high-profile guests include tennis<\/span> player Boris Becker and American film<\/span> actor Kevin Costner. <\/p>\n

According to Euronews, celebrity guests, both old and new, were attracted to the island thanks to its nightlife and extravagant lifestyle. <\/p>\n

While Westerland is the island's main city, there are also other towns dotted around the island, including Kampen, Wenningstedt-Braderup, and Munkmarsch.<\/p>\n

There are only 15,000 people on the island, but this number can increase in the summer months when European holidaymakers visit. <\/p>\n

In addition to celebrity-spotting and people-watching, there are plenty of things to do on Sylt.<\/p>\n

First off, there are several white sandy beaches on the island, including Ellenbogen Beach, Hoernumer Odde Beach, and Uwe Dune.<\/p>\n

Other outdoor activities include Morsum-Kliff – a popular hiking trail on the island. <\/p>\n

The walking route has been described as "one of the most important geological monuments in Germany."<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sylter Welle is a state-of-art aquatic centre, with a huge water slide, an 82-foot lap pool, a hot tub, as well as a family-friendly pools. <\/p>\n

Other activities on the island include a seal-watching tour, and there are also more boat excursions to the neighbouring islands. <\/p>\n

Holidaymakers can also visit the Leuchtturm – the island's lighthouse. <\/p>\n

Anyone wishing to visit the tiny German island will need to fly to Hamburg Airport.<\/p>\n

Both Ryanair and easyJet operate direct flights to Hamburg from the UK, with prices starting from \u00a319. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

From Hamburg Airport, it's a three-hour drive to the island, which is connected to the mainland via a railroad causeway. <\/p>\n

Passengers will need to load their car onto a train to reach the island. <\/p>\n

Despite the celebrity draw, accommodation on the island is relatively affordable. <\/p>\n

For example, a one-night stay at Hotel Gutenberg, a three-star hotel, costs \u00a337 per person. <\/p>\n

But this isn't the only European island that's gone unnoticed by holidaymakers in recent years.<\/p>\n

While Brits who visit\u00a0Croatia\u00a0often go on holiday to places like Dubrovnik, Split, or Zagreb,there's also the lesser-known island of Cres.<\/p>\n

Despite being one of the largest islands in Croatia, it still remains largely untouched by hordes of holidaymakers.<\/p>\n
