FIRST-TIME dog owners have been urged to avoid six specific breeds for their own safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dog behaviourist Will Atherton is an expert on our four-legged friends and claims novice owners could be in danger if they choose a \u2018confident\u2019 dog as a pet.<\/p>\n


\n<\/p>\n

Will believes that the breeds\u2019 violence is bred into their DNA and should never be put in the wrong hands.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The XL Bully could soon be on the banned list in the UK, but it\u2019s not the only breed to watch out for.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So what are the worst dog breeds for first time owners?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBreeds that are going to be terrible for first time owners are going to be ones that have extreme violence in their breed histories,\u201d says Will.<\/p>\n

\u201cBreeds that were bred for fighting, breeds that were bred for hunting, breeds that were bred for genuinely not just scaring off humans, but causing them serious harm.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Will claims there\u2019s a few characteristics these pups have that are massive red flags for first-timers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to be very confident, they\u2019re going to be very independent and they are going to be prone to violent behaviours,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are going to be breeds like the American Pitbull Terrier – unfortunately I love the breed, but that is the reality – the Tosa Inu, the Dogo Argentino, the Presa Canario.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe livestock guardian breeds like the Caucasian Shepherd, the Turkish Kangal – they all need absolute expert levels of experience, level, handling, skill and assertive, confident leadership to keep them under control and safe canine companions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can very much have a dog like mine but in the hands of a first time owner, she could be an absolute disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re lacking experience and need a family-friendly pooch to join the ranks, there are plenty of other placid and affectionate breeds to choose from.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t worry – they\u2019re not all handbag dogs, either.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Will recommends the King Charles Spaniel if you\u2019d like a smaller dog or, if you\u2019ve got space for a larger breed, go for the Labradoodle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a few supersized gentle giants too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLook no further than the English Mastiff, the Newfoundland or the St Bernard,\u201d he told fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thousands of dog lovers have viewed Will\u2019s first time owner clip, and they\u2019ve suggested a few more breeds to pop on the black list and keep inexperienced owners safe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One user replied: \u201cI would also include Chow Chow, Shiba Inu and Shar Pei.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
