He has since been fined \u00a32.2million and banned from working in finance for life for dishonestly advising 670 customers, including 150 steelworkers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sibthorpe, from Ebbw Vale, South Wales, said he was left &#8216;in tears&#8217; after finding out he had lost\u00a0\u00a350,000 from a pension saved over 40 years after trusting Reynolds&#8217; Active Wealth Limited business.<\/p>\n<p>He said Reynolds had the &#8216;gift of the gab&#8217; when he tried to sweet-talk him and his wife Edwina into taking his advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/05\/13\/76202003-12597663-image-m-58_1696508647951.jpg\" height=\"700\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Malcolm Sibthorpe says he lost \u00a350,000 from his pension after listening to rogue financial advisor Darren Reynolds. He just ripped everyone off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He knew he was stealing money from us, but he wasn&#8217;t the only one.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sibthorpe was one of thousands of steelworkers trying to manage their future savings after the British Steel Pension Scheme was restructured in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;I think we were gullible, he told us we would lose 10 per cent if we went with the government scheme and we wouldn&#8217;t be able to get our money out. That&#8217;s how he sold it to us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He told he us he did pensions for the police and Post Office. When we saw his name on the FCA website we thought it was legitimate.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>But months later Mr Sibthorpe and other workers began to worry about the scheme they had placed their money in and contacted Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;I phoned and he said he would get my money out, but I never heard from him again. We were crying. We didn&#8217;t know what was going to happen with our money.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sibthorpe got his pension pot back four months after choosing to go with Reynolds &#8211; but it was \u00a350,000 smaller due to transfer fees.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds was investigated by the Financial Conduct Authority who found he &#8216;had a clear disregard for customers&#8217; interests in favour of his own personal gain.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/05\/13\/76202007-12597663-image-a-56_1696508639106.jpg\" height=\"1193\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Mr Sibthorpe said Reynolds had the &#8216;gift of the gab&#8217; when he tried to sweet-talk him and his wife Edwina into taking his advice<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/05\/13\/76202231-12597663-image-a-57_1696508641949.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Mr Sibthorpe was one of thousands of steelworkers trying to manage their future savings after the British Steel Pension Scheme was restructured in 2017. Pictured: The Port Talbot steelworks in South Wales<\/p>\n<p>The FCA said: &#8216;He dishonestly established, maintained and concealed a business model which incentivised recommending products which produced the highest commission for the adviser rather than the best outcome for the customer..&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It said that Reynolds made \u00a31.01million in prohibited commission payments.<\/p>\n<p>They added: &#8216;These payments were funnelled via companies connected to Mr Reynolds and were intentionally designed to disguise their true origins.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds was fined \u00a32,212,316 and banned from working in financial services. His colleague Andrew Deeney was also fined \u00a3397,400 and banned from working in financial services.<\/p>\n<p>Therese Chambers, Joint Executive Director of Enforcement and Market Oversight, said: &#8216;This is one of the worst cases we have seen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mr Reynolds, who allowed evidence to be destroyed and who has consistently sought to evade accountability, and Mr Deeney, lied and lied again.<\/p>\n<p>They said the pair lied &#8216;to dupe people into leaving safe pension schemes and placing money meant for their retirement in unsuitable, high-risk investments then to try and hide their misconduct from us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Their motivation was based on self-enrichment.
