An American man has shared his bewilderment over five British slang words – revealing the commonly-used UK phrases that he says ‘baffle’ people living in the US.<\/p>\n
US native Jacob Hoff posted a video on TikTok listing snog, bugger, p***ed, fit and ‘whatever you guys are calling cigarettes over there’ as terms that ‘baffle us in the States.’<\/p>\n
In his video, he counted down from five (least confusing) to one (most confusing), while offering his own commentary on why the words are so strange to him and his fellow Americans.<\/p>\n
Coming in at number five on Jacob’s list was ‘snog.’<\/p>\n

US native Jacob Hoff posted a video called: ‘The top five British slang words that baffle us in the States.’\u00a0The words were snog, bugger, p***ed, fit and ‘whatever’ Brits use for cigarettes<\/p>\n
He explained what the word meant in the UK, with a disturbed expression: ‘Snog means to kiss. It sounds so ugly, I mean, come on, snog.’<\/p>\n
‘Jesus, sounds like something you’d do with your nose,’ he added.<\/p>\n
Jacob’s number four was ‘bugger.’<\/p>\n
‘Bugger is fun to say. I think it’s a bad word. I don’t know,’ he said.<\/p>\n
‘We hear you guys say it a lot and I have no idea what its supposed to stand for.’<\/p>\n
According to Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, ‘bugger’ is a term used ‘as a swear word when somebody is annoyed about something or to show that they do not care about something at all’<\/p>\n
Next for his number three was ‘p***ed,’ which he said with an aggressive inflection.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘Now see here we say p***ed like, “I’m p***ed. I’m upset,”‘ he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These are ancient words.’<\/p>\n A third commented: ‘These are very dated slang words.’\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘And who even says snog anymore?’ someone else wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘Britain and America: two nations divided by a common language,’ another added.<\/p>\n Jacob’s TikTok bio reads, ‘Top five lists to live by,’ and his whole account is dedicated to his personal take on different topics.<\/p>\n He’s done a plethora of videos including top five most overused words, party schools in the US, worst movie genres and most expensive fashion brands.<\/p>\n
