A shocking new trend which sees teenagers hit themselves in the face with hammers has sparked outrage, with doctors warning of the very obvious dangers.

The viral "bone-smashing" trend has seen videos emerge of people hitting their faces with hammers, bottles, massagers, weights or other blunt objects to break or fracture their bones.

The idiotic theory behind the scary trend is that the participant's bones will heal in a more desirable alignment in the hopes of reshaping their facial structure to become "more attractive". But there is no evidence this is the case.

Unsurprisingly, there is a high chance it could go wrong, leaving social media users in danger of disfiguring themselves. The horrific videos have prompted Dr Prem Tripathi, a plastic surgeon in San Francisco, to share a video of his own urging people to end the trend.

In a TikTok video, which has gained more than a million views, he warned: "I honestly never thought I'd have to come on here and say this, but please don't intentionally break the bones in your face."

He added that if you "displace those bones and then they have to heal on their own," you can end up with a malunion fracture, which occurs when a fractured bone heals in an abnormal position. He explained that these fractures can lead to health complications if "the bones are not healed properly."

Despite the danger, videos with the phrase 'bone smashing tutorial' have already garnered over 364 million views on TikTok.

Viewers of Dr Prem Tripathi's video were left stunned when they learned of the trend as they took to the comments praising the doc for calling out the trend. One user said: "Thank you. Hopefully more doctors can speak up on this because this trend is getting out of hand."

Another added: "We are DOOMED." A third commented: "Noooooo, whyyyy???"
