After more than 10 years of marriage and three children, the Prince and Princess of Wales are a rock solid couple, so it’s easy to forget it wasn’t all plain sailing for the couple in the years before they married.\u00a0<\/p>\n
While the pair have always tried to keep their relationship private, one report emerged claiming Prince William left Kate Middleton in tears by cancelling an important plan while they were dating.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In her book, The Making of a Royal Romance, royal author Katie Nicholl wrote that William and Kate had not been able to spend Christmas together in 2006 because, although they had been dating for five years, only married couples were invited to the Queen’s Sandringham celebrations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
So to make up for spending Christmas Day apart, the couple made ‘big plans’ for the New Year.<\/p>\n

Yet that all changed when William called Kate on Boxing Day and told her that he would be staying with his own family instead – despite having promised that he would spend time with the Middletons.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The pair met at St Andrews University in 2001 where they were both studying history of art, although William switched to geography.<\/p>\n
It was Kate, who is six months older than William, who was credited with persuading him to continue his studies as he struggled to adjust during his first year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
William was said to have been wary of making a commitment to his girlfriend, mindful of his own parents’ difficult marriage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Katie Nicholl wrote: ‘William had been having second thoughts and sat down with his father and his grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate. Both advised him not to hurry into anything.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
In April 2007, the news broke that Kate and William had broken up, with sources saying the\u00a0Queen was ‘disappointed’ by the news.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n However, there was nothing to worry about and they were seen kissing at an army party at barracks in Bovington, Dorset just weeks later and the rest is history.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The royal couple announced their engagement to the public in 2010 and married in 2011<\/p>\n <\/p>\n They now have three children together – Prince George who is nine years old (to the left of William), Charlotte who is seven (centre) and four-year-old Louis (far left). They are pictured on the balcony following Trooping the Colour last year<\/p>\n Kate then moved into William’s\u00a0Clarence House flat, where they would spend weekends together after he returned from his military duties on Fridays.\u00a0<\/p>\n The royal couple announced their engagement to the public in 2010 and in her first TV interview, Kate admitted she ‘wasn’t very happy’ about their split at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘But it actually made me a stronger person,’ she said. ‘You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger, and I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time.’<\/p>\n Meanwhile, William agreed that having time out from their relationship had been valuable.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up so it was just a bit of space, and it worked out for the better,’ he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n Their magical spring wedding ceremony was watched by 162 million people worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Prince and Princess of Wales expressed their love for each other in front of 2,000 specially invited guests, including David Beckham and Sir Elton John, at Westminster Abbey.<\/p>\n They now have three children together – Prince George who is nine years old, Princess\u00a0Charlotte who is seven and four-year-old Prince\u00a0Louis.\u00a0<\/p>\n
