Organisers of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues have cancelled the long-running event in a move that has dismayed the Victorian jazz community.<\/p>\n
The decision to shut down the festival was announced in a recent email sent to festival patrons. In a statement published on the festival\u2019s website, organisers pointed to financial constraints and \u201ca shifting and uncertain outlook for music festivals generally across Australia\u201d.<\/p>\n

Vince Jones performs at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues.<\/span>Credit: <\/span>Roger Mitchell<\/cite><\/p>\n They announced that a scaled-back festival called The Last Hurrah will be held in November.<\/p>\n Jazz historian Eric Myers, who played an integral role in shaping the festival said: \u201cWangaratta has far and away been the most influential regional jazz festival in the country over 30 years; allowing it to disappear would be the Australian jazz community\u2019s biggest failure in living memory.\u201d<\/p>\n The annual festival, held in regional northeastern Victoria, started in 1990. At its peak, the festival consisted of approximately 80 events held across eight concert locations, featuring over 350 international and local acts.<\/p>\n Since 2018, there has not been a full-scale festival held, with four artistic directors resigning within the space of five years.<\/p>\n Following two years of lockdown disruptions, last year saw a return to in-person performances, though floods marred the events. Despite this, the cancellation was unexpected, with the Wangaratta Chronicle<\/em>, one of the festival\u2019s partners, reporting in May that \u201cplanning is in motion for both 2023 and \u201924\u201d.<\/p>\n Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the festival was a fantastic celebration of both music and regional Victoria and that he was surprised to hear organisers had not sought further funding.<\/p>\n \u201cGrowing up in Wang, this is a pretty big deal,\u201d he said at a recent press conference. \u201cIf there is work that can be done to provide [support], there\u2019s lots of grant funds, there\u2019s different money that is potentially available if people want one last ditch effort to try and have a 2024 festival … my door is always open.\u201d<\/p>\n Creative Victoria confirmed that the festival received $112,500 to cover January 2022 to December 2023. The bulk of this funding was spent on the 2022 festival, said chair of the festival board Dave Fuller, with only a third of that amount allocated to 2023.<\/p>\n Following three unsuccessful applications for federal funding, \u201cwe had begun discussions about winding down \u2013 we didn\u2019t feel comfortable applying [to Creative Victoria for 2024 funding] and potentially narrowing chances for another group\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n A spokesperson for Creative Australia (formerly the Australia Council for the Arts) said: \u201cCreative Australia acknowledges the importance of regional jazz festivals, and the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in particular, to Australian music. This festival has been a valuable launching pad for many important jazz artists and a hub for jazz in Australia, and we are very sorry to see it come to an end. We are happy to discuss available funding options that may be open to them.\u201d<\/p>\n Saxophonist Julien Wilson, the 1994 winner of the prestigious National Jazz Award presented by the festival, said that \u201cWangaratta was like Christmas for jazz musicians. It was the event you\u2019d look forward to all year\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cAs well as the great and varied music … it was a chance to see friends and colleagues from all over the country, and relax in a country venue or restaurant with world-famous musicians,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n Australian composer and pianist Paul Grabowsky is philosophical about the cancellation of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues.<\/span>Credit: <\/span>Joe Armao<\/cite><\/p>\n For pianist Barney McAll, the first National Jazz Award winner, the festival \u201cwas a place where culture thrived, fostering vital cross-pollination between international virtuosos and Australia\u2019s finest improvising musicians\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThe international jazz competition offered young talent a chance to grow. It is disheartening that the importance of these things wasn\u2019t fully understood,\u201d McAll said.<\/p>\n Pianist and composer Paul Grabowsky was more philosophical: \u201cIt is always a pity to see a festival with such a wonderful history, with such an extraordinary contribution to Australian jazz in many, many forms, and to Australian blues music, to see its passing.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe have to be grateful to the enormous contribution that it made … as sad as it is, we have to kiss it goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
