Neighbours Paul Robinson star says they ‘didn’t care’ if show was coming back

Neighbours legend Stefan Dennis, who has played the wily Paul Robinson on and off in the show since the very first episode on March 18, 1985, “didn’t really care” if the show came back following its cancellation last year.

While fans were thrilled that Amazon Freevee stepped in to save the legendary Australian soap after it was axed in July 2022, Stefan, 64, didn’t share their excitement.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media ahead of the show’s eagerly anticipated relaunch he said: “People keep saying the word excitement and I don’t relate to it as exciting.

“It was certainly interesting [that it was saved] and great because we had a job again,” he said.

“But more than anything and this sounds really corny, but more than anything, I was so grateful, I’m being absolutely honest here, because I’d gone into semi-retirement so I really didn’t, for me, I didn’t care whether the show was coming back or not because I was okay.

“But I was, and without trying to sound too magnanimous, I was so pleased that the show was coming back for the industry because people didn’t realise what a gaping hole it left,” he continued.

“Not just…in the audience’s eyes, that afternoon slot that was filled so comfortably for them was suddenly gone, but the industry.

“The industry didn’t realise until the show actually finished, and they went, ‘Oh my god we don’t get this anymore. We don’t get that anymore. We can’t do this. There’s no training ground anymore,’ he intimated.

“And so the fact that the show has been brought back for all of those reasons is absolutely fantastic.

“And it’s so great that all my dear, dear, dear friends have all got jobs again,” he enthused.

Stefan first departed Neighbours in 1992 before returning for a short stint in 1993.

He then returned to the role full-time in late 2004 and played Paul until what was supposed to be the finale.

The teatime soap returned in spectacular fashion on September 18 and time jumped two years from that episode meaning that there were plenty of surprises for fans.

New episodes of Neighbours stream on Amazon Freevee Monday to Thursday.
