A brand new poster for the upcoming instalment of NCIS has been released featuring ex-team leader Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) and the rest of the show’s main cast. After spying a mysterious figure in the background of the CBS drama’s latest promo, fans flocked to Twitter to predict a certain character’s long-awaited return.

Fans believe Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) has made a shocking return in the background of the new poster for NCIS season 19.

The latest promo was revealed to fans on Twitter on Monday ahead of the show’s season premiere in a week’s time.

In addition to revealing new series regular Gary Cole as Special Agent Alden Park, the post finally answered one of the show’s long-running mysteries.

The caption read: “We think it’s about time this diner had a name. Grab a cup of coffee at Elaine’s Diner.”

While most fans were thrilled to see the marketing for the next season finally get underway, many of them couldn’t help but devote their attention to the shadowy figure watching from the background.

In response, a number of viewers speculated former NCIS agent Tony DiNozzo may have made an unconventional return in the new poster.

One fan replied: “Is that Tony in the background? Coming in or going out?”

Of course, the figure’s identity has remained a mystery as their face has been obscured by a well-placed lamp.

While their inclusion in the poster could be a simple coincidence, it could also be a clue for Tony’s eventual return in the 2021-22 season.

Another fan replied: “Oh, I didn’t see that person at the door. Hard to tell – too blurry.

“But it does look like a male. Wouldn’t that be exciting if it was Tony though!”

The stranger’s black t-shirt is certainly a departure from DiNozzo’s usual garb, though it would fall in line with the agent’s departure from the team in 2016.

Another Twitter user questioned fellow NCIS fans: “Calling on our top team investigators…. So ‘Who’s’ the person/ghost going out the diner door?”

To which one fan responded: “I know who I want it to be. cough Tony cough.”

However, another viewer suggested the figure could be a cameo from NCIS’ current showrunner Steven D Binder.

While other fans even theorised the diner’s empty seats may have been deliberately left absent to allow for some of the show’s most popular characters to return.

“Two seats left for Ellie and Jack so considerate,” said one viewer.

And another added: “I know. And Tony and Ziva can work behind the counter since they’ve left NCIS.”

With rumours flying about season 19 being the final instalment of NCIS, will the popular CBS crime drama bring the whole gang back together one last time?

NCIS season 19 premieres on Monday, September 20 on CBS.
