EastEnders Ballum stars reunite in special video preview

EastEnders is set to continue its behind the scenes look at all things Walford as Secrets From The Square welcomes the Ballum boys onto set, socially distanced from presenter Stacey Dooley.

As well as talking about the relationship between them as actors and the phenomenon of the Square’s power couple, Max Bowden and Tony Clay may also be dropping hints as to what lies ahead for them.

And, in a clip from the upcoming episode obtained by Metro.co.uk, Stacey quizzes Max on the mystery surrounding his audition – and his previous work with Steve McFadden.

Stacey: Tell me about your audition

Max: I was brought in to play a character called Tyler because it was a recast so quite secretive – they didn’t want people to know he was coming back and it was a recast. Then I came back on January 8th – I’m good with dates (to Tony), well I don’t remember your birthday, but I’m good with every other date.

Tony: (laughs) It’s all lies.

Max: I’ve got it written in my diary. They said “we weren’t totally honest with you, you’re free to walk away. The role is Ben Mitchell, Phil Mitchell’s son!” Steve’s brilliant, he was very welcoming. We spoke before day one which was daunting as hell but it was exciting because you knew things were going to be rough around the edges.

Stacey: You and Steve worked together when you were tiny?

Max: Yeah, really tiny. He played Captain Hook in Peter Pan and I was playing Michael. (To Tony, who is laughing) Don’t you start! But essentially at the start, he was playing my dad.

Stacey: Isn’t it funny how things come around?

Max: Yeah, exactly!

EastEnders: Secrets From The Square with Max Bowden and Tony Clay will air on Tuesday 14 July on BBC One.
