Caller Anna defended Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall after several viewers rang into the show to blast her and say that Diana would have been a much better consort. Anna disagreed, explaining the role of consort is to act in a supporting role to the King or Queen and did not think Diana was “ever supportive of Charles” but believed Camilla was a better fit. Anna added Camilla understood her role was not to get herself out there but to make people realise Prince Charles is “the main player” as the panel debated the “sincere wish” of the Queen to put her in this new role.
Speaking on Jeremy Vine on 5, Anna fought back against several callers who rang into the show to slam Camilla.
But Anna defended the Duchess of Cornwall and said: “Well, I knew that the Diana fans are going to come out against anyone taking her place.
“Frankly, I think that Diana would not have been a good Queen Consort, and let’s get one thing straight.
“We’re talking here about somebody who is a Queen Consort, not a reigning queen, so you know, they should all chill out and realise that anybody that marries in the Western world, a king automatically as the wife, bears the title Queen.
“You might not like it but that’s it. You are Queen.”
Host Jeremy Vine interrupted and remarked that Diana “would have been a brilliant queen” and called her an “A1 queen”.
Anna disagreed and said: “No, now you’re talking about reigning queen or Queen Consort.
“As a Queen Consort, I think she would have been rubbish because she was a competitor.

“She was not a consort, I don’t think that she was ever supportive of Charles, she was always out there as competition and that’s not what you want.
“When you’ve got a Queen Consort, you want somebody as either support, like the Queen Mother supported her husband like Philip supported the Queen.
“And Camilla is marvellous support for Prince Charles and when he becomes king as a Queen Consort, she’s not out there to try and get [out] herself.
“She always follows him and makes people realise he’s the main player, she’s the support act.
“And that’s what her position is about and in that respect, she will be brilliant, she already is.”

The Queen wrote in a statement marking her Jubilee on Sunday: “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me.”
The Queen also reflected on her family and support network in the letter and added: “I am fortunate to have had the steadfast and loving support of my family.
“I was blessed that in Prince Philip I had a partner willing to carry out the role of consort and unselfishly make the sacrifices that go with it. It is a role I saw my own mother perform during my father’s reign.”
However, the announcement of Camilla becoming Queen Consort has garnered criticism as it had been expected she would only become Princess Consort out of respect for Princess Diana.
